While there are many over-the-counter remedies for an itchy scalp, many of them contain dangerous chemicals. The good news is that, in addition to thyme,  there are numerous other natural and toxic-free options available.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This is a go-to remedy for itchy skin including the scalp. Loaded with anti-inflammatory properties, apple cider vinegar helps to kill the yeast and any viruses that can cause an itchy scalp. In addition, apple cider vinegar balances pH levels which can restore moisture to the scalp and keeps dryness at bay.

To use: Rinse your hair and scalp with water and let it dry. Combine an equal amount of apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Apply to your scalp and dab with cotton balls. Let it sit for about five minutes and shampoo and condition as normal. Repeat as often as necessary.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contains antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antiviral properties that make it an excellent scalp conditioner. The healthy fat found in this tropical oil creates a barrier that locks in moisture.

To use: Rub a small amount of organic coconut oil on your scalp and cover your head with a bag. It is best to sleep with the coconut oil on your scalp. Wash and condition as usual in the morning. Use as often as needed to relieve dryness, itchiness, and inflammation.

Aloe Vera

Fresh aloe vera gel has powerful therapeutic properties that work to alleviate itchiness and inflammation of the scalp. The cooling nature of the gel relieves pain associated with dryness.

To use: Rub a small amount of aloe gel on your scalp and allow it to set for at least 15 minutes. Wash and conditions as usual.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is particularly effective against dandruff. It contains antiseptic properties that heal and cool the skin.

To use:  Apply fresh lemon juice generously over the scalp. Let it sit for five minutes and shampoo as usual. You can also dilute the lemon juice with water or even add some organic yogurt to lemon juice for an overall scalp and hair treatment. Use a few times a week until dryness and itchiness disappears.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has powerful antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammation properties that help alleviate irritation and itch. There are a number of ways to employ this therapeutic oil to the scalp.

To use:  Add 20 drops of oil to one-half cup of your normal shampoo and use a few times a week to moisturize your scalp and reduce itchiness. You can also dilute a few drops of 100% pure tea tree oil in coconut oil and massage into your scalp.
