For most hair types, washing it daily is not necessary. In fact, washing your hair with harsh, commercial shampoos on a daily basis will strip your hair of its natural oils. This will cause hair to be drier and more prone to breakage. Your hair needs to produce natural oils in order to keep your scalp and hair moisturized. Instead of washing your hair daily, try using a dry shampoo.
Why Dry Shampoo?
The whole premise for a “dry’ shampoo is to put an oil absorbing substance (like arrowroot ) on the oily parts of your hair to absorb the oil. This is the perfect solution if you do not have time to wash your hair. Dry shampoos are also very helpful for styling hair and need it to hold a certain style. It’s especially great for very fine hair that refuses to hold any type of style without the use of hairsprays and gels. You can use arrowroot or cornstarch by itself and apply it to your hair with a makeup brush, then comb the powder through your hair and style as usual. A wet/dry shampoo works the same way but it’s easier to apply, less messy, and super easy to make.
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup arrowroot (available here)
- 1/4 cup witch hazel (available here)
- essential oil (we use Plant Therapy Essential Oils available here)
- spray bottle
Add a the quarter cup of arrowroot powder to the warm water.
Stir to completely dissolve the arrowroot. Make sure there are no clumps.
Add the 1/4 cup of witch hazel to the arrowroot mixture. The witch hazel will help the mixture dry faster once in your hair.
Add a few drops of essential oils to the mixture. This is optional. The essential oils are primarily for fragrance, but you may like to opt for an essential oil that also helps with any hair problems you have. Here is a great list of twelve of the best essential oils for hair.
For example, rosemary has been found to stimulate hair growth, tea tree oil can help with dandruff, while lemon oil can help with an oily scalp.
Pour into a spray bottle for easy application.
How to Use Wet/Dry Shampoo
